You've decided to come join the fun in GIMP land, and we're excited to have you! Now the question is, how do you get GIMP up and running on your computer?

  • Gutenprint (and its predecessor, Gimp-Print) is available in source code form under the GPL (GNU General Public License). You are entitled to download the source code. Gutenprint on Mac OS X would not be possible without CUPS, the open-source print spooler built-in.
  • OS X: GIMP is a fantastic free alternative to Photoshop for all desktop operating systems, but on Mac it was a bit of a pain to set it up, because you needed to install X11. Gimp now, however.

Gimp Mac Os X

It's really easy to Install GIMP. Here's the basic idea:

Is gimp for mac available

GIMP 2.8.4 is now available as disk image for Mac OSX. Please note that with this release, we have moved GIMP's per-user data from '/Library' to '/Library. The GIMP download package should be revealed in your downloads. It is a '.dmg' file, which is a standard download package for MAC. Click on this file once it has finished downloading. The download package will open, displaying a status bar as the files are extracted (it will take a minute or so, depending on how slow/fast your computer is).

  • First, you'll need to know just a little information about your computer. Basically, you'll need to know what operating system you're running, and if GIMP is compatible with it.
  • Then, you'll find the correct version of GIMP for your operating system at GIMP.org.
  • Last, you'll download GIMP, and run the installer.

GIMP is a wonderful program. In Windows and Linux alike, I loved being able to effectively do medium-level photo-editing and graphics work in the FLOSS rockstar program (third level only to Mozilla's programs followed by the top level Linux distros themselves). Since switching to a Mac and thus (obviously) making the switch to OS X, I simply downloaded the GIMP for Mac program available. Unfortunately, GIMP has taught me to dislike X11. Okay, really dislike it.
Has anyone heard any rumors on if we can expect a native version of the GNU Image Manipulation Program for OS X? I mean, Aqua interface, universal menu bar..the works.
Thanks in advance,
