I usually show the drawer (Cmd-shift-D) and drop again the PDF (or any other) in the drawer. It's quite convenient to print 4 docs on the same page for example.

Good hint!
Another way is to drag the original, already open, pdf to the sidebar (but not into the open document: below it), then right click on it and choose 'open in New Window'.

Another way is to open the side bar if it is not already open, click anywhere in the sidebar then press Command-A, Command-C, Command-N.
Using the same idea you can manually select specific pages and create a new PDF consisting of only those pages or create a PDF from the results of a find.
One caveat is that this only works with the sidebar in Contact Sheet or Thumbnails mode.

This is a nice hint. Also, Skim.app is a pdf reader supposedly optimised for reading journal articles and theses. In particular, it allows split screen and 'snapshots', which are essentially new windows of the same document.
The only problem is that you cannot select and copy text from either the split screen window or the snapshots, which make further searching for references quite difficult. The devs are also fairly resistant to increasing this functionality (for quite baffling reasons, I think).

An alternative database manager/browser is the FireFox plug-in (or maybe extension, don't know FF terminology very well) SQLite Manager, which appears on the Tools menu after installation.
Works well with the database under discussion, and with the iPhoto '09 databases, though I've only browsed, never modified, since I'm rather inexpert; I usually work on copies, Just In Case.
Not sure I can cite any advantages to it, but it is an alternative for the rebels among us.
